barrel striking

Barrel striking is an older term meaning the lengthwise hand filing of a barrel exterior with the file laid across (side to side) the surface.

It is done to properly size (during making, before fluid steel) a barrel, remove surface imperfections from a barrel, and improve the atheistic characteristics of a barrel by smoothing the surface finish.
